Flipping Homes? Where Do You Shop?

2009 confessions of a shopaholic wall 002 247x241 custom Flipping Homes? Where Do You Shop?I woke up this morning in a hot sweat! With SEVEN rehabs all jumbled-up in my tiny-little brain, I was in a fever! I’ve got some serious shopping to do over the next few days. I’ve got to buy a ton of tile for flooring, as well as shower and bath surrounds and kitchen backsplashes. Then I how about all the decorative lighting? What about, vanities and faucets, etc…

Home Depot is usually a safe bet for most items with Lowe’s taking a close second – but I get tired of the same old, same old.  Then you’ve got the little local guys like Winks, Zeskinds and Castle Wholesalers – but they’re generally good for cabinets and windows and stuff.

So I’m asking all you Baltimore, Maryland, DC and Virginia rehabbers, where do you buy the materials for your rehabs?

Closeouts. Odd lots. Auctions. Fire sales. I want to know where the deals are! So help a brother out. Let me know where you’re getting your sweet deals, and I promise to let you know where I’m getting mine!

—-  TEASER ALERT  —-

Here’s a little tease to entice you… I’m buying prefabbed granite for $10 bucks a foot! Granite! Real granite for the cost of friggin’ laminate! I’ll tell ya’ how to get it, if you tell me about your secret stash!

Ain’t I a little minx for teasing like that?

  1. Craig you have to call Penn Lumber they make it really easy tell them what you want over the phone they send it out and you pay for it over the phone. Everything from windows, doors, roofing materials, and anything else you can possibly think of. I think there # is 410.728.5451

    Happy New Year

    Craig,

I typically buy from lowes or HD. Lowes gives me a 10% contractors discount on anything and a 15% discount on Valspar paint. HD has something called the “bid room” where if you have a order of $2500 or more. You log the order in their system. 24 hours later they come back with a discount for you. I have gotten asa much as 25% off!

    My 2 cents,

    Law

  3. Craig Fuhr says:

That's an awesome referral Marcel. I will check them out! Thanks!

  4. Craig Fuhr says:

Law – GREAT TIP for those who did not know that HD and Lowes offer those types of discounts. I have known this for a while and often pull that TRUMP card. The ONLY downside is you really have to batch up all your rehab purchases before the job starts then hot them with the full material list.

When are we gonna find out about that $10/ft granite?? Inquiring minds wanna know!!

  6. Craig says:

Peggy – when are you gonna chime in with where you get your supplies? ;-)

    I’m almost ready! Ain’t I a little tease?

  7. Craig Fuhr says:

Peggy – I didn't see you chime in with any of your favored suppliers! ;-)

I will let you know soon. Are you in MD?

  8. parcointernational says:

hey Craig…love your site and the passion and enthusiasm you bring to the business!
Craigslist is a great source for products and materials…you never know what you'll find but worth checking your area's listings daily to see what pops up…everything from HVAC to old bricks, it's like a treasure hunt and with garage sale prices in many cases!
    Steve

  9. Peggy says:

No, not in MD–I'm a couple of hours north of the Gulf of Mexico :) So maybe your granite supplier won't be convenient for me. I mostly use ho hum Home Depot, but I'm in the process of researching other stores where I could get better prices. Guess that's why your post caught my eye…

  10. Craig,

    TIP #1:
My location isn't secret because I go to Home Depot and Lowe's. They are located everywhere, can easily tell you which store has your item in stock, and a VERY generous return policy.

You can get the 10% contractor discounts and contractor only specials.

My secret sauce involves buying 10% and 20% coupons on ebay for about $1 per coupon. Lowe's will honor a 20% Home Depoit coupon!

    TIP # 2
http://www.southernsalesservices.com – A building materials auctions held every saturday, and the warehouse is open during the week.

    TIP #3
Habitat Re-Stores http://www.habitat.org/cd/env/restore_detail.as... – Used building materials store run by Habitat for Humanity. Located in PG, AA, Balt City/Bal County, and other counties.

  11. Craig Fuhr says:

Hey Steve – That's a great post!! Thanks! Folks, I just went to the MATERIALS section in the FOR SALE subheader on Craigslist. I found no less than 4 new places that I will visit today. If you live in a big town my guess this will be a great source.

  12. Craig Fuhr says:

Vernon folks is THE REAL DEAL! Dawg, I knew you would come through with some tasty tid-bits! From the downloading of the coupons (priceless) to hitting the Habitat store, that is just some awesome stuff. I plan to do both.

Bro – you've GOT to check out JLcabinet.com. Trust me, they are a haul, but you'll than me.

  13. Vernon Vaughan says:

JLcabinets….consider it done! I'll come back with a kitchen and will even get the wife something from the Outlets.

    Now, about that pre-fab granite………………

  14. Craig Fuhr says:

JLCabinet.com Call my boy Ling and tell him that I sent you. You will be glad you did.

  15. Larry says:

Yeah but what most people don't know is that appliances are included, so $2500 adds up quick.

  16. Larry says:

Builders Surplus in North East. It is worth the drive. I have bought entire kitchen cabinets for less than $1500 assembled.
