Reflections on 2008 – Looking ahead to 2009

3133149087 31c546bbfe Reflections on 2008 Looking ahead to 2009Holy cow!  Can you believe that 2008 is almost over.  It seems like just yesterday, that I was writing down my goals for a year that is about to pas. We all know it was a crazy year economically and politically.  I could go on forever about the markets, the election, and the bailouts – but I’d rather leave all that to the pundits.

First and foremost, I’d like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas, or Merry “Insert your Holy Holiday here.” From my little family to yours, we wish you peace and prosperity during this season, and in the New Year!

Let’s talk abut 2008 for just a bit….

I am incredibly thankful for your comments and suggestions.  And I hope that you are enjoying this blog as much as I am.  I plan to focus much more on blogging my experiences in 2009 – so stay tuned.

I’m also thankful for the mentoring and friendship I received from Steve Cook and Pete Giardini.  Without their ability to see things in me, that I sometimes don’t see, I would not be where I am today.

I’m thankful for all my Club mentoring students.  I have learned more from you all than you have learned from me.  We will continue to grow, learn and prosper together.

And to my lovely wife Tracy who has stood by my side and supported me even when my backbone stood like over-cooked spaghetti, I am thankful to truly be the luckiest husband and father in the world.  Without Tracy, I am nothing.  She knows when I need support, she knows when I’m lacking focus, she knows when to confidently guide me when I’m lacking confidence – and she knows how to kick me in the butt when it needs kicking.  We all need a Tracy in or lives.

Did 2008 bring you all you wished for?

Maybe 2008 wasn’t as good for you as you had hoped.  Look – truth be told, I struggled for the first half of the year.  It wasn’t until a lot of people smarter than me, (including my wife) recognized that my focus was about as scattered as thoughts of a crazy man.  I really was all over the board in terms of my business vision – and that in turn took a serious toll on my personal vision.

Folks – you cannot succeed in business until you first know what you want out of your personal life.  Write that down and take it to the bank.  Its so true.  Like rats in a maze, so many of us blindly run through life looking for a way to find the cheese only to find that we really don’t like cheese.  Make sense?  If not, we’ll talk more about this in the months to come.

So, I ask you – how was your focus in 2008?  And, if you didn’t get all out of the year that you had hoped for, was it because of a lack of focus?  Was it because you really don’t know what you truly want?  If so, you need to stop right now – and focus on you and what you want from your life.

My Goals for 2009.  This is Scary!

Its a proven fact that successful people write down their goals, AND more importantly, successful people surround themselves with others who hold them accountable.  So guess what, I’m about to do something that I thought I’d NEVER do.  I’m gonna pull back the curtain and let you all in on my goals for 2009.  And I’m asking you all to hold me accountable!

Here they are:

1.  Be in the best shape of my life physically, by the end of 2009.  I will lose 40 pounds by religiously going to the gym, and severely cutting back on my caloric intake.  That fat guy below will be gone by 12/31/09.  I cannot be the best father I can be if I’m too fat, too tired or too lazy to play with my kids.  This is a very personal goal that has been a life-long struggle – and I’m making the solemn commitment to all of you to commit to myself.3134025070 34ea456766 Reflections on 2008 Looking ahead to 2009

2.  I will become debt free.  And folks, let me tell you – this is a number that exceeds $220K, when I include mortgages.  Don’t let anyone fool you into thinking that there is “good” debt and “bad” debt.  Its all bad.  Face it – our debt rules us.  It tells us where we work, when we work, how much time we spend on vacation, where we live…etc.  Think about it.  Its true.   I want to be 100% debt free by December 31st, 2009.  How dramatically would your life change if you had no debt?

3.  I will continue to be the best husband and father I can be.  For my wife’s undying support, I will strive to make her life easier and happier.  My children will have a father first, and a Dad who loves real estate second.  Time spent with them will be exactly that; no laptop, no cell-phone – just pure undivided attention.

4.  I will be the very best teacher I can be.  My students will work hard and they will understand that there is no free-lunch, but I will reward them with even better mentoring, and support.

5.  My business will grow exponentially as a result of focusing ONLY on wholesaling, mentoring, and rehabbing.

All The Best!

I sincerely wish you all the very best in 2009.  Please chime in with your thoughts and comments – and look for some crazy, amazing updates in the coming weeks.  My student; Prencella “PJ” Hall just started on an $80,000 rehab in Park Circle and I just started on a small “6-weeker” that should be INCREDIBLE when complete.

I’m always looking for good deals so if you come across anything you don’t want, or if you’re looking for a partner, please call me first.  I have the ability to get things done quicker than most.

I am new to real estate, I wish that I had been reading your web page more often. It might have saved me some grief, learning the problems other investors face. I bought a rowhome in Baltimore City and I had planned to rehab it but I ran into numerous problems. The seller made it seem as if there was a renter already in the house, but the truth is he was a squatter and they sold me a condemned house.

My handyman quit on and spent the money I gave him. Then the tenant won't pay rent and he refuses to leave. I am trying to get him evicted. He is taking me to court for pain and suffering (I have only owned the house for 4 months, yet he has lived there for several years) and he is also asking to set up rent escrow. I am trying to sell this property as soon as possible.

    Craig,

Brad Sweitzer just paid me $200.00, after I went to his house on Monday at 5:30 a.m. a few weeks ago. I just got on your website and found out that he is in jail. That's great news! Now, if I could only get Jason Welch and Anthony Lincoln. Could you please give me a call?

    Thankyou.

  • Craig,

Its been a while since we last spoke, but I just read your 2009 goals and wanted to pass along a link that may help. I'm dropping weight too, and this site is great. Its a 12 week program, and it has all kinds of free info to help you reach your goals. Good luck, take care and don't be a stranger...

Dear friend I very much liked your thoughts and goals for 2009, but I think you need to widen the scope of your goals and ambitions. What I mean by this is to have goals what are not only related to you as an individual person and your surrounding family, but to include things for your friends, country, the environment and perhpas the world at large. For example, I wish that peace will spread and no wars take place. I have to remind myself that your goals you put for yourself are achieveable for you as you have somehow control over them, but what mentioned you might not have control over. However, evern if we are not able to control some events, but somehow the feeling of good things could help us psychologically and no doubt that there could be opporuntieis through which we can contribute to welfare of our countries and to the world at large. With my love - from Bahrain

Great Goals Craig! Go forth and conquer.
  • Johnny Brune:

Its been a pleasure doing business with you. You are truly one of Maryland's best mortgage brokers, especially in terms of First Time Buyer programs.

Thanks for your comments and thanks for reading!

My plan is to approach my 50's (I'm 41 now) feeling and looking like a 30 year old. My cardiologist gave me a clean bill of health, but said if I don't do something about my weight now, I'll start to REALLY feel it when I approach 50. That was a pretty rude wake-up call, huh?
  • JP

Thanks for your continued friendship. I hope that you and I can work more closely this year on some of my "online" goals.

    We'll talk soon
  • Rick

Thanks for your comments. It sounds like you and I are following similar formulas for RE success. You just cannot have a sweet enough product in this market.

I work out at the LifeTime Fitness in Columbia and would be more than happy to host. Lifetime is to gyms like my houses are to rehabbing. Its an insane, over-the-top place that redefines fitness centers.
  • Jeremy

Thanks for commenting! Where do you work out? Funny thing is, I've actually been as low as 10% body fat, so I know exactly what I must do. I just have to apply my knowledge of diet and fitness.

The book that changed it all for me was:

You Sir, are an inspiration. I'm lucky to know you - and my single greatest bright spot in 2009 (from a business standpoint)is knowing that you and I will become closer friends as we also strive to do some business in Indy.

    Craig,

Improtant goals to accomplish. I plan on seeing the newsletter in Dec 2009 with a fit and trim debt free Craig. I love reading your articles. You put family first and your goals reflect that. I decided to make a similar change to my diet/health when I turned 35. Four years later I am stronger and in better shape approaching 40 then I was approaching 30. Good luck in 2009!!!
  • Criag,

Thanks for sharing your goals, dude. Inspires me to get my butt into gear and get mine done ASAP.

It's been great to know you over the last couple of years and to know of, see, and hear about your continued progress in so many areas.

I wish you the very best, my friend, this year and far beyond.

    Craig,

We haven't met but I look forward to that in 2009. I also Rehab in Baltimore and will be completing one in 21229 in mid January. My strategy involves putting out good product (3+ BR's, 1.5+ Ba's, Forced Hot air & Central AC, new Kitchens, New Baths, Finished Basements, HW Floors 1st floor, Wall to Wall Upstairs, All new appliances, etc.) targeted to First time home Buyers.

I'd like to ramp up my investing but want to sell the 2 complete properties that I will have in Jan 09 first to stem my concerns about the "Challenge of the Resale" I'd love your opinion on my procing.

To stay on point, I admire your goal setting and hope that you make strides in achieving them. I've been working out for 35+ years, so perhaps we could catch a work-out some time

The Best to you and your family

    Regards,
    Rick Barron

Congrats on 2008, and congrats on setting your goals for 2009. If you need some pointers on getting in shape, I am certified as a personal trainer (even though I've never used it). Keep in mind though that I will defer most of your questions to my fiancee (many certifications) who towers over me in fitness knowledge. You know where to find me. Happy Holidays, and thanks for keeping the blogs and newsletters going.

    Jeremy
  • Those were some great goals. You forgot goal #5 though, research the LDS Church! Its been very satisfying to watch you expand this year. If we get slammed by a bus tomorrow, we are not going to give a crap about how many more rehabs we did.
I consider you one of my good friends who can also call me out when I'm screwing around. Thanks for being you.

    Merry Christmas bud.
