Video-Tip: Picking the Right CON-Tractors.

Several years ago I got burned by a con-man acting as a contractor. I learned many lessons from my experiences with this Mega-Asshole, but most of all I learned that the majority of these guys put the “CON” in CONtractor. If you’re a rehabber like me, chances are you’re a big picture, artistic kind of person; high intellect, but not real focused on the minute details. If you’re like me, you must then, always be on the look-out for CON-tractors.

Picking the right guys can make your life so much easier. Even more important than having a great general contractor, you need to find good sub-contractors. Here’s why.

There's one unfallable truth to humanity. It is: "There is no shortage of assholes in the world."
I own 2 barber shops and have come up with an effective "asshole filter" to avoid such unpleasant business relationships. Just curious to find out how you screen for contractors as a rehabber. Where do you start? What common traits did ALL the assholes share? Warning signs? I'm looking forward to doing my first rehab soon and would love to be armed with any useful info you can spare. Your input is greatly appreciated.
  • Eben - sorry for the delayed response. I absolutely laughed out loud when I read the first line of your AWESOME comment.

The best way to screen contractors is to look at several past and present jobs and to thoroughly check references. But, and THIS IS HUGE - all contractors flake at some point. Its just in their DNA. So to combat that, you must keep them on a VERY short leash.

Don't EVER let them get too far ahead of you. Don't give a guy 1/3 down, when you could break that payment up into several. Make a clear scope of work, and a draw schedule - then follow it to a tee.

This is the ONLY way to protect yourself.
